Help relief efforts for 300 families affected by Cyclone Fani

Everybody must have seen the news about Cyclone Fani which made landfall on India’s eastern coast on May 3, 2019 and the devastation it wrought. Thanks to the government’s preparedness, very few lives were lost, inspite of it being the strongest cyclone to hit India in 20 years.

Inspite of that though, over 10 million people have been affected in nearly 15,000 villages across Odisha. Homes have been washed away, schools have fallen over, water sources have been infected, and even hospitals and health facilities have been impacted.

In rural parts of Odisha, the situation is especially grim, with children vulnerable to disease, malnutrition and neglect.

With the monsoon coming up soon, repair and rehabilitation work needs to be finished quickly. After the initial relief announced by the Odisha government, we expect the rehabilitation process to take anywhere between six months to one year.

In this scenario, we have decided to support 2 villages – Karimpur and Barakudi. Located in Brahmagiri block of Puri District, these villages are home to 300 families in desperate need of help as no relief has reached them yet.

With power supplies being affected and restoration likely to take a couple of months more, the people here are in urgent need of temporary shelter and medical supplies and emergency lighting. We’ve decided to help with tarpaulin sheets, solar lamps and medicine kits.

The total cost for the supplies is Rs. 3,45,000 as detailed below:
Tarpaulin sheet: 300 @ Rs. 500 each – Rs. 1,50,000
Solar Lamp: 300 @ Rs. 450 each – Rs. 1,35,000
Medicine Kits: 300 @ Rs. 200 each – Rs. 60,000

With your help, we can ensure that the people of Karimpur and Barakudi will receive temporary shelter and access to medicines while relief work proceeds to help them reclaim their destroyed lives.

Thanks to your support, we’ve managed to raise enough funds to provide relief to families from Karimpur and Barakudi in Puri.
